The National Institute of Health has found acupuncture to be helpful for a number of conditions including headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and nausea of pregnancy. If you think you may benefit from acupuncture treatment, consider discussing this with your own physician. Insurance may not always cover these treatments.
Northwest Family Physicians offers acupuncture treatments on-site at the Crystal office. For scheduling information, please call the Crystal office at 763-504-6500.
Following are some common questions and answers related to Acupuncture.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a method of restoring energy balance to promote healing and functioning through inserting needles at precise points on the body.
How does it work?
Acupuncture’s scientific rationale is that inserting needles at acupuncture points stimulate the nervous system, releasing chemical which either alleviate pain or affect the body’s internal regulating system. Acupuncture is acknowledged by the World Health Organization for treatment of numerous medical conditions. It is especially helpful with physical difficulties caused by tension and stress.
Do the needles hurt?
Most people feel only minimal pain; some feel no pain at all. After the needles have been inserted, one may feel a sensation of tingling.
Is there a risk of infection?
Because the needles are sterile and disposable, there is no risk of infection.
How many treatments are needed?
This varies with the individual and is dependent on whether the patient has an acute condition or an enduring and difficult problem. Treatments can vary from as many as 1 or 2 a week for several months to as few as four a year. During the initial consult the patient is informed about the working of acupuncture and an examination is done to plan for a treatment program and the number of visits.
Will my insurance cover Acupuncture?
Coverage is rapidly changing and it is dependent on each insurance company’s policy. Please check with your insurance company.
