The following is a list of General Preventive Health Recommendations.
Diet: Emphasis on fruits and vegetables, limit saturated fats and sweets.
Activity: 40 minutes of moderate physical activity daily.
Calcium: 1000 mg. daily for most, 1500 mg. for women after menopause not on
estrogen.
Weight: Body mass index under 25 for adults, follow charts for children.
Skin Cancer: Protect yourself from the sun with clothing and good sunscreen.
Smoking: Make a plan to stop smoking (your doctor or P.A. can help you with this).
Ages 0-17
Immunizations:
By age 2: 4 DPT, 3 Polio, 3 HIB, 3 Hepatitis B, 1 Chickenpox, 1 MMR, (4 pneumonia if birthdate 6/00 or later).
By kindergarten: 5 DPT, 4 Polio, 3 Hepatitis B, 1 Chickenpox, 2 MMR By junior high: kindergarten shots plus dT (tetanus).
Well Exams: 2 wks, 2 mos., 4 mos., 6 mos., 12 mos., 18 mos., 2 yrs., 3 to 4 yrs.,
kindergarten, 4th grade, 7th grade, 9th grade, 11th grade.
Ages 18 and Over
Immunizations:
Tetanus (Td) - Every 10 years. Hepatitis B series if high risk (exposure to blood products or risk of sexual transmission).
Flu Shot - Yearly. Age 50 and over or high risk.
Pneumonia Shot - One time for age 65 and over or if high risk. Should be tested for immunity to chickenpox if no history of having the disease.
Well Exams: Every 3 to 5 years for ages 18 to 64, every 1 to 2 years over age 64.
Cholesterol Screening: If low risk, every 5 years: men age 35 to 75, women 45 to 75.
Pap Smears (women): Every 3 years after 3 normals in a row (for low risk women), consider discontinuing at age 65, not needed for most women who have had a hysterectomy.
Mammograms (women): Every year age 50 to 74 (other ages can be discussed with your doctor or P.A.).
Breast Exam (women): Every 3 years age 18 to 39, every year age 40 to 74.
PSA/Rectal Exam (men): To be discussed with your doctor or P.A.
Hemoccult Cards (colon cancer home test): Discuss with your doctor, often done every year age 50 to 79.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (colon cancer test): Every 5 years age 50 to 79.
