Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) uses a flexible, lighted tube in the examination of your esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, and duodenum (first portion of your small bowel). The examination can be performed in the office, and it provides an accurate way of diagnosing problems in your upper gastrointestinal tract such as gastritis, ulcer, cancer and evaluating many upper abdomen or chest complaints. Standard scopes are 11-13 mm in diameter. The newest and smallest scopes are 5.0-5.3 mm in diameter. We use the smallest scope ( 5.3 mm) in our office for added comfort and safety. You will be given oral sedative medication to relax, and your heart and breathing will be monitored. Dr. Steven Shu will perform EGD.
