Nuclear cardiac stress testing is available at Northwest Family Physicians Plymouth, overseen by James Welters MD. in conjunction with Elizabeth Klodas MD, a cardiologist with the Center for Diagnostic Imaging. For this test, which can be done either with exercise or without, a radioactive isotope is injected into the bloodstream before the test and then again after the test. A picture is taken with a special camera after each injection. A difference between the two pictures suggests one or more blockages in the small arteries around the heart. This is the most accurate test other than an angiogram for detecting significant heart disease. Nuclear stress testing is especially useful in people who've already had a heart attack or other cardiac problem. Other types of stress testing available at NWFP include stress echocardiography and regular stress EKG. Your provider can discuss with you the most appropriate test to evaluate your heart's function.
