Sclerotherapy (injection treatment) is a procedure used to eliminate unwanted varicose veins or superficial telangiectasias (spider veins). Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a saline or detergent solution site, with subsequent destruction of the unwanted vein.
Varicose veins may be treated by elastic support stocking, injections, stripping, or most recently by stab-avulsion technique. In stab-avulsion treatment, small 3 mm incisions are made, depending on the extent and severity of the veins. Normally no stitches are needed, and the incisions are closed with just Steri-strips with small gauze dressing covering them. Elastic bandages are then applied over the dressings and remain in place for 2 weeks. Dr. Steven Shu performs this procedure in the Crystal office.
